Interview: Debate Over Politics Blossoms Into Lifelong Friendship

The Chicago Shady Dealer sat down with undergraduates Scarlett Rightwing and Blueford Liberalmale, who recently became best friends after meeting on opposite sides of a political argument. Read that interview now.

CSD: Where did you meet?

Scarlett Rightwing: In the IOP building.

CSD: Who was the speaker?

Blueford Liberalmale: No one. Politics is my entire life and I spend most of my free time there.

CSD: How did your first debate go?

SR: Considering how it was basically a shouting match between us about whether Elon Musk should be deported, I would say quite well.

BL: *Scoffs* If you could even call it a debate. Our argument was full of gotchas and strawmen and random factoids that could plausibly be traced to some website or social media post we looked at. There were no contentions, structure, rebuttals, or cross-examinations that are commonplace in a classical Linc-Dougie. That’s what I call a Lincoln-Douglas debate.

CSD: When did you two realize there was chemistry?

BL: We started talking when I found out she doesn’t support an 80% tax on the one percent. Basically, she wants to abandon the working class and suck up to our corporate overlords. I thought, what weird thoughts coming out of someone’s mouth! In other words, my kind of person.

SR: Textbook liberal nonsense. I’m just a believer in the free market. Better that than an emasculated soyboy who parrots whatever the elites tell him.

CSD: How did you come into your own political beliefs?

SR: My parents, and the algorithm.

BL: The algorithm.

CSD: How are you able to reconcile your political differences?

SR: I believe we need to come together as a nation and agree to tolerate each other’s views. Hating each other only traps us in a partisan cycle that happens to really, really, benefit the side I support. By breaking the cycle—

BL: Trust me, that attitude was nowhere to be found when President Biden was in charge. But at the end of the day, she’s a strong independent woman and I respect that.

CSD: Final question. How do you differ on the Israel-Palestine conflict?

R: *gasps* That’s private! *giggles*

L: *blushing* Yeah, haha, we’re not even ready for that yet.
