Arley D. Cathey Dining Commons was officially closed Friday after a dead chicken was found in a lettuce and tomato sandwich.
Although the fragment of fetid fowl was discovered before it could be inadvertently consumed, the incident raised particular concern in the wake of recent discoveries of bugs and fecal matter in Cathey Commons.
“It was a terrifying experience. I looked down at my sandwich and saw this sizzling, tan slab of who knows what? Turns out to be a part of a dead chicken,” said Ari Giordano, a second-year . Within minutes of the incident, which sent students screaming from the cafeteria, officials found similar dead-bird parts in serving trays and in refrigerated storage areas of the dining hall’s kitchen.
In a prepared statement, a spokesman for UChicago Dining said, “We would like to apologize for this dreadful incident. We have yet to determine if the chicken or chickens were dead or alive when it, or they, entered our food supply. An internal investigation is underway.”
At press time, the Shady Dealer was unable to confirm similar reports of ground cattle found in Bartlett’s grill station sandwiches.
