{"id":7245,"date":"2025-10-01T08:37:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T13:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chicagoshadydealer.com\/?p=7245"},"modified":"2025-09-30T08:46:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T13:46:20","slug":"back-to-basics-aims-of-education-address-stresses-shapes-counting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chicagoshadydealer.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/01\/back-to-basics-aims-of-education-address-stresses-shapes-counting\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Back to Basics&#8221; Aims of Education Address Stresses, Shapes, Counting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROCKEFELLER CHAPEL\u2014President Paul Alivisatos announced on Monday that this year\u2019s Aims of Education address will reflect a readjustment of priorities, placing fundamental skills such as counting and identifying shapes at the forefront of the University\u2019s educational philosophy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explaining the importance of \u201cbringing our focus back to the basics,\u201d Alivisatos directed this year\u2019s speaker, Slavic Languages and Literatures Professor Maria Glagoleva, to devote the majority of her speech to highlighting the personal fulfilment that comes with being able to count to one hundred and sing through the alphabet without help from one\u2019s parents. \u201cIt\u2019s been neat playing around with this whole \u2018expanding your capacity to engage critically with challenging ideas\u2019 and \u2018deepening your understanding of your role in an ever-changing world\u2019 routine, but it\u2019s time to get back to the stuff that really matters,\u201d said Alivisatos. \u201cDo our students know about rectangles? Do they know what sound a cow makes?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview following Alivisatos\u2019 announcement, Professor Glagoleva expressed enthusiasm for the proposed reworking of the speech. \u201cA well-rounded liberal arts education is kind of dumb anyway,\u201d she told the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dealer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSo like, I don\u2019t know. It\u2019s probably good to count stuff.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University\u2019s shifting academic approach will also be reflected in the curriculum for the new school year, with coloring books to be introduced for the first time to programs other than Business Economics.
