Among them is the decision to un-retire the number 42 league-wide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 1997, the MLB has barred all players from wearing No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson, the league\u2019s first Black player. In a statement to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dealer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred clarified the league\u2019s choice:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe MLB is concerned with merit and all discriminatory practices highlighting the DEI efforts of the past have been removed. Highlighting the excellence of players like Jackie Robinson promotes the idea that things were not and are not equal. Jackie Robinson was a very good baseball player, but so was Rogers Hornsby, and we do not intend to uniformly retire his number.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn keeping with the President\u2019s wishes for us, we have also decided that Roberto Clemente Day will no longer be celebrated,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cHaving a day named after a player based on his Puerto Rican nationality reinforces the DEI agenda the administration is pushing back against. The MLB, however, will be unveiling a new, annual celebration every April 2nd in honor of Liberation Day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Trump reacted to the news on Truth Social later in the day: \u201cI have tremendous respect for the BRAVE actions taken by MLB. Skin color has no place in the celebration of baseball. I thank Rob Manfred for doing what is RIGHT and ending the corrupt DEI practices in sports. WE are getting rid of DEI everywhere and the radical left will have no idea what hit them.
