In a bold and deeply theoretical move, the University of Chicago\u2019s Booth School of Business has proposed that the University begin imposing tariffs on international students, citing \u201cmarket efficiency,\u201d \u201cacademic protectionism,\u201d and \u201cjust seeing what happens, honestly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The recommendation, published in a 300-page working paper entitled \u201cInvisible Hands, Visible Fees,\u201d outlines a dynamic pricing model in which students from abroad would pay additional \u201caccess tariffs\u201d to enroll in classes, attend lectures, and, in premium packages, sit within twenty feet of tenured professors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cInternational students are, by every economic model, imported goods,\u201d said Professor Ronald R. Greenthal, lead author of the study, while sipping a $14 campus coffee and adjusting his Patagonia vest. \u201cAnd as we know from global trade theory, imported goods should be taxed to protect local industries\u2013in this case, domestic students struggling to keep up with group projects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The paper argues that these tariffs would help balance what it calls an \u201cacademic trade deficit,\u201d where international students allegedly \u201cflood the campus with high GPAs, multilingual fluency, and an alarming number of internships,\u201d leaving domestic students with only Philosophy minors and vague hopes of podcast stardom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Critics, however, have been quick to pounce. \u201cThis is peak Booth,\u201d said Dr. Alyssa Martinez, a political science professor and owner of three tote bags with the word \u201cCoexist\u201d on them. \u201cNext they\u2019ll propose surge pricing for office hours and dynamic demand curves for campus Wi-Fi.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the backlash, the administration appears intrigued. One anonymous source inside the Provost\u2019s Office confirmed the University has already run simulations using past tuition data, average GPA differential, and how often a student uses phrases like \u201cnet marginal surplus\u201d in casual conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Student reactions have been mixed. \u201cAs an international student, I find this deeply offensive,\u201d said Priya Nandakumar, a second-year MBA from India. \u201cBut as a Booth student, I must admit… the Laffer Curve checks out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

First-year economics major Kyle \u201cK-Money\u201d Thompson expressed his support. \u201cIf we tariff the smart kids, maybe my curve will actually curve,\u201d he said, before failing to explain what elasticity is for the fourth time.<\/span><\/p>\n

The University has yet to officially respond, though sources say the Board of Trustees is \u201cactively pricing out tariff consultants,\u201d and \u201cjust delighted someone finally found a way to monetize campus diversity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
