So it should come as no surprise this quarter that two second-year students have taken it upon themselves to found yet another finance RSO. It\u2019s called Phoenix Indexes, and its goal is to teach students the \u2018tricks of the trade\u2019 in the world of passive investing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club shares an origin story with practically every financial RSO. \u201cPhoenix Indexes was founded to solve one key problem: we were rejected from the Blue Chips,\u201d said Ian Vester, PI\u2019s president. \u201cBut we realized we could do better with little to no effort: just invest in the entire market at once, sit back, and relax.\u201d According to early reports from both clubs, PI indeed out-earned the Blue Chips, one of UChicago\u2019s active investment clubs, by a small margin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem? They\u2019re having trouble figuring out what to do during meetings. \u201cWe bought an ETF at the start of the quarter. It consists of a diversified portfolio largely representative of the U.S. and international markets,\u201d explained club vice president Hans Idle. \u201cWe teach members about how we shouldn\u2019t touch that investment under most circumstances.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some students, PI\u2019s unearned resume boost is enough to join. But many feel that, though the club was exciting at the outset, it\u2019s just too boring for its own good. \u201cWe make a fair amount of money, sure,\u201d said Vester, \u201cbut it\u2019s been hard to convince people to come to our meetings.
