Officially known as \u201cpositive,\u201d the attitude is also referred to by the street names \u201csilver lining,\u201d \u201cbright side,\u201d \u201chope,\u201d or simply \u201chappiness,\u201d and is linked to a wide variety of debilitating effects, including\ufeff refusal to sweat the small stuff, poor performance in whining sessions, and lack of motivation to avoid the outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>Recent health surveys report that only 11% of UChicago students use positive attitude \u201cevery day,\u201d but as many as 28% do so \u201cseveral times a month.\u201d Nonetheless, because of the ease with which positive attitude can be distributed and the extent to which students can develop a dependence, administrators fear that the use could increase rapidly, especially during the coming spring and summer months. <\/p>\n<p>Even students who do not intend to use positive attitude themselves may be subject to its harmful effects, due to a phenomenon known as \u201csecondhand positive attitude.\u201d Addicted individuals engaging in typical behaviors may pass the effects of the attitude on to bystanders. Activities such as smiling, laughing, building relationships, hugging, and even having a genuine conversation can transmit many of the harmful effects of positive attitude to others in the vicinity. Moreover, people who have been exposed to secondhand positive attitude are more likely to use the attitude themselves, often after first trying less-potent but equally addictive \u201cgateway attitudes\u201d such as \u201ctomorrow will be better than today\u201d and \u201ctaking it in stride.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>        The University of Chicago Police Department recently announced an increased patrol presence at locations such as dining hall house tables, cool professors\u2019 offices, the Point, and grassy parts of the Quadrangles, which have reputations as \u201chot spots\u201d of illicit positive attitude use and distribution. Students found possessing more than three iotas of positive attitude will be subject to disciplinary procedures including more homework and sunny-day curfews.<\/p>\n<p>        University administrators are also developing \u201csofter\u201d measures to discourage students from using positive attitude.
