During a ride Thursday morning to Logan International Airport, Uber driver Travis Murphy moved without warning from lighthearted racial observations into what several sources confirms was \u201cflat out racism.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brody Tarleton, one of Murphy\u2019s passengers, told The Dealer that his driver\u2019s bigotry came as a complete surprise: \u201cI mean, one minute everyone\u2019s having a good time \u2013 I think he was telling us about meeting a Korean rapper \u2013 and then the next he\u2019s saying that people shouldn\u2019t be able to wear turbans on the street after 9\/11.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cI just never, you know, pegged him as a racist, \u201d Tarleton continued. <\/p>\n
\u201cI thought we were on the same page some football players do have really strange names,\u201d reported Carson Davis, another one of Murphy’s passengers. \u201cOur conversation was absolutely charming until the words \u2018Jew banker\u2019 came out of his mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n
Uber co-founder Garrett Camp spoke out against the incident at a press conference Friday morning, pledging to distribute 10% of the company\u2019s November profits to the ADL and NAACP, among other charities. \u201cUber was founded on the value of all people, \ufeffregardless of color or creed, making discrimination on the basis of race by one of our employees both unexpected and unacceptable,\u201d Camp told the assembled reporters. \u201cBut, I mean, come on.
