As many campus beefs go nowadays, it all started with a tweet. <\/p>\n

Last week, John \u201cJay\u201d Ellison, the D<\/insert>d<\/delete>ean of S<\/insert>s<\/delete>tudents in the College, using the Twitter handle @JohnQuoteJayQuoteEllison,<\/insert>using the <\/delete>T<\/insert><\/delete>t<\/delete>witter handle @JohnQuoteJayQuoteEllison,<\/delete> wrote the seemingly innocent tweet: \u201cLooking forward to a relaxing day with no major activities.\u201d <\/delete>He was <\/delete>using the Twitter handle @JohnQuoteJayQuoteEllison.<\/delete><\/insert><\/insert><\/p>\n

Some found the statement harmless, but fans of the U<\/insert>u<\/delete>niversity\u2019s Major Activities Board, or MAB, quickly jumped in and pointed out the targeted attack<\/insert>slur<\/delete>. The following tweets were all written by student accounts:<\/p>\n

\t\u201cMusic >>>>>> Deans\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI love concerts and hate all administration #music\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cyou\u2019re turning our campus into the town from footloose\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201clol i bet if we polled the student body most people would side with mab\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201c@UChicagoMab do you see this shit??????\u201d<\/p>\n

Within hours, MAB\u2019s own T<\/insert>t<\/delete>witter account, @UChicagoMAB responded: \u201c@JohnQuoteJayQuoteEllison fight us. we\u2019ll keep planning major activities til the day we die #summerbreeze #music\u201d<\/p>\n

Ellison continued his rampage: \u201cAt first I just wanted to have a relaxing day, but now I have to say more: music has no place on this campus,<\/insert>.<\/delete>\u201d and \u201cI don\u2019t care about professionalism any more, FUCK ALL MAJOR EVENTS.\u201d<\/p>\n

At this point various other campus administrators started piping up<\/insert>in<\/delete> with their two cents on the matter. Michele Rasmussen, D<\/insert>d<\/delete>ean of S<\/insert>s<\/delete>tudents in the University, @RagingRasmussen, wrote,<\/insert> \u201c#StandWithEllison MUSIC IS BAD. THE DEANS ALL HATE MUSIC!<\/insert>\u201d.<\/delete><\/insert> an<\/delete>d<\/delete> M<\/insert>m<\/delete>inutes later, Karen Warren Coleman, the <\/delete>V<\/insert>v<\/delete>ice P<\/insert>p<\/delete>resident for C<\/insert>c<\/delete>ampus L<\/insert>l<\/delete>ife and S<\/insert>s<\/delete>tudent S<\/insert>s<\/delete>ervices,<\/insert> @KareTooMuchKaren, wrote,<\/insert> \u201cPersonally I\u2019m fine with minor activities, but we\u2019ve had too many major ones and it\u2019s time to shut it down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both T<\/insert>t<\/delete>witter and the <\/insert>uchicago-secure W<\/insert>w<\/delete>i–<\/insert>F<\/insert>f<\/delete>i network<\/insert> actually crashed briefly <\/delete>for about<\/delete> eleven minutes while the whole campus was stirred up, and<\/delete>so<\/insert> many students turned to Instagram to voice their opinions during this time<\/delete>. But unbeknownst to all, MAB was hard at work crafting a \u201cdiss track\u201d on their Sound<\/insert>cloud account (soundcloud.com\/uchicagomab). <\/p>\n

As soon as the campus regained W<\/insert>w<\/delete>i–<\/insert>F<\/insert>f<\/delete>i, the track dropped and immediately went viral. For approximately four and a half minutes, the members of the Major Activities Board seem to have just yelled,<\/insert> \u201cWe like music and planning major activities. We are the Major Activities Board,<\/insert>.<\/delete>\u201d on repeat over an edgy and decidedly \u201ccool\u201d beat. <\/p>\n
