When the Oscar Nominees were announced on January 24th, many of the usual candidates were nominated: Leonardo di <\/delete>Caprio, Cate Blanchett, and Eddie Redmayne. However, one complete unknown,<\/insert> was nominated for Best Actor,<\/delete> UChicago<\/delete> first-year<\/insert>student<\/delete> Alex Greenhill, was nominated for Best Actor<\/insert> for their daily performance of their gender.<\/insert><\/p>\n

Greenhill, who was assigned male at birth but now goes but they\/them\/their pronouns, expressed<\/insert> their disbelief at the recognition.<\/insert><\/p>\n

\u201cTo have such a mainstream and heterocentric organization nominate me is crazy –<\/insert> I wasn\u2019t even in a film!\u201d Greenhill said. <\/insert>continued,<\/delete> \u201cI mean we all know that the Academy loves to recognize romanticized cinematic representations of LGBTQ<\/insert> strife, especially when they feature straight, cisgendered <\/insert>actors like Jared Leto, <\/delete>\ufeff<\/delete><\/insert>\ufeff Sean Penn, or Julianne Moore, but to have them validate the daily struggles of an actual LGBTQ<\/insert> individual is amazing. I mean how did they even find me?\u201d<\/insert><\/p>\n

The President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, explained that she was snooping on her daughter Tamara\u2019s T<\/insert>t<\/delete>umblr one night when she came across Greenhill\u2019s blog. Boone Isaacs was shocked to learn that gender is a societal construct that requires all participants to conform to its traditionalist notions of presentation. <\/insert><\/p>\n

Hudson exclaimed,<\/delete> \u201cThrough Greenhill, I realized that everything we do is performing our gender,” Boone Isaacs said. “<\/insert>.<\/delete>We speak and act and dress in ways to confirm to those around us that we are male or female. And it\u2019s all dictated by our genitalia at birth? I mean when I saw a picture of RuPaul saying ‘<\/insert>\u201c<\/delete>We\u2019re all born naked and<\/insert>t<\/delete> the rest is drag,‘<\/insert>\u201d<\/delete> I realized that there<\/insert>ir<\/delete> is no more difficult and complex performance than our own gender. I knew I had to nominate Greenhill to recognize that. He, I mean, they<\/i>,<\/insert> are a true visionary.<\/insert>\u201d <\/insert>Boone Isaacs says that she started lobbying for Greenhill’s nomination the next morning.<\/insert><\/insert><\/p>\n

Greenhill was elated to receive the nomination, but still noted discontent. <\/insert><\/p>\n

\u201cThe gendered aspect of the performance categories leaves no space for acto<\/insert>x<\/delete>rs who do not identify on the gender binary to be nominated,” Greenhill said.<\/insert>.<\/delete> “<\/insert>I don\u2019t know why we should even differentiate between performers of various genders.
