The Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday, and already <\/delete>and <\/insert>many of t<\/insert>them<\/delete>whicht<\/delete><\/insert>he nominees<\/insert> have been praised for their unique storytelling and captivating performances by some of the industry’s most beloved actors<\/insert>. From \u201c<\/delete>Spotlight<\/i>\u201d<\/delete>\u2019s poignant and profound characters to the ability of \u201cThe Revenant\u201d to thrill and amaze us<\/delete>thrill and amazement of The Revenant<\/i><\/insert>, many of this year\u2019s nominees tell wonderful, evocative tales. H<\/insert>But<\/delete> where are the women in this year\u2019s Oscar nominees<\/delete>However, this crop of nominees has left many viewers asking, “<\/insert> ‘<\/delete>Where are the women<\/insert>‘<\/delete>?“<\/insert><\/insert>?<\/delete> Do this year\u2019s Oscar nominees pass<\/insert>t<\/delete> the Bechdel test? If you could look it up and tell us, that\u2019d be awesome.<\/p>\n

Yes, t<\/delete>T<\/insert>he Bechdel Test,<\/insert> is<\/delete> a test of gender equality in film,<\/delete> created by Alison Bechdel in her comic \u201cDykes to Watch Out For\u201d in 1985, often tells an interesting tale about the state of feminism in the movies<\/insert>. For a film<\/insert>movie<\/delete> to pass the test, it needs to have at least two female characters who have a conversation at some point in the movie about a topic other than a man. Seems easy, right? We thought so too, but this year\u2019s crop of movies surprised us. Or maybe didn\u2019t surprise us. We are not entirely sure yet.<\/p>\n

\tIt\u2019s 2016, people. The Oscars should be recognizing films with powerful female characters, and we really want to know if this year\u2019s crop of Oscar nominees do. If you could watch the Oscar nominated movies for us and shoot an email to [email\u00a0protected]<\/span><\/delete><\/a>[email\u00a0protected]<\/a><\/insert> with the ones that pass, that\u2019d be so cool of you. Perhaps, if one comes really close, but still doesn\u2019t pass, that would be useful information to know as well, and we can talk about how we are making progress but still not giving women sufficient<\/delete>meaty,<\/insert> or<\/insert> even just <\/insert><\/insert>adequate roles to play.<\/p>\n

\tYou know, I bet \u201c<\/delete>Entertainment Weekly<\/i>\u201d<\/delete> or \u201c<\/delete>Vox<\/i>\u201d<\/delete> already did something like this. Perhaps they talked about how the role of women in movies has changed over the past 50 years. That would be really good article too. Anyways, a google search of \u201cVox Bechdel Oscars 2015\u201d could probably get the job done. Forward whatever<\/insert> you find out <\/insert>to the same email.<\/p>\n

\tMaybe next year can be better. Or maybe this year was perfect in terms of gender equality and next year can\u2019t be better.
