While other UChicago<\/delete> students will be traveling to Paris, Beijing, and Oaxaca in the winter quarter, third-year <\/insert>Junior<\/delete> Kelsey Shippman will be immersing herself in perhaps the most foreign<\/insert>exotic<\/delete> location of all<\/insert>, Shondaland\ufeff<\/delete>. Shondaland i<\/delete>s <\/delete>\u2014<\/insert>the highly complex television universe of producer Shonda Rhimes.<\/p>\n

\u201cBasically, I\u2019m going to watch Scandal, Grey\u2019s Anatomy, How to Get Away With Murder, and Private Practice for a whole quarter,\u201d Shippman said. \u201cBy applying rigorous inquiry to these shows, I hope to<\/insert>o <\/delete> fully understand the fascinating<\/insert>strange<\/delete> world that Shonda has created.\u201d<\/p>\n

The decision to allow Shippman to do her semester<\/delete>quarter<\/insert> abroad in Shondaland was not without controversy. Sarah Walter, Director of Study Abroad, noted that ultimately her department decided that Shondaland would fulfill the civilization sequence required by the Core. <\/p>\n

Walter said, <\/delete>\u201cThe universe of Shondaland is so distinctive from the society we live in,<\/insert>\ufeff<\/delete>” Walter said.<\/insert>.<\/delete> “<\/insert>The civilizations<\/delete>societies<\/insert> and cultures of Shondaland are so vivid, so multi-dimensional, and so realistic, that we felt that Kelsey would really need the whole quarter to truly understand them<\/insert>.\u201d <\/p>\n

However, Elana Kranz, the Associate Director, didn\u2019t seem happy with the new study abroad option. <\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not even traveling anywhere,” Kranz said. “<\/insert>.<\/delete>Kelsey is just going live in the Crown House common room in a tangle of blankets all quarter. If binge watching conferred credit, we\u2019d all have<\/insert>be<\/delete> PhDs by now!”<\/p>\n

Shipment<\/delete>ppman<\/insert> felt truly blessed to be one of the first scholars to study this field. <\/p>\n

\u201cI have so many research questions already<\/insert>,” Shippman said.<\/insert>.<\/delete> “<\/insert>Why are there only plot twists? How are these casts so diverse? How can one hospital experience so much drama? Do law students have any actual work? How do you actually get away with murder? Will Fitz and Olivia ever truly be together?
