Ted Cruz of Texas <delete class=\"del cts-1\" data-cid=\"4\" data-time=\"1454441145190\" data-userid=\"17\" data-username=\"Walker King\">was<\/delete><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"7\" data-time=\"1454441145886\" data-userid=\"17\" data-username=\"Walker King\">came out<\/insert> on the receiving end of a massive caucus.<\/p>\n<p>After taking a larger share of the caucus than his Republican rivals Donald Trump and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Cruz declared victory, exulting that \u201cthe path to the nomination may be long and hard, but today the caucus brought us <delete class=\"del cts-1\" data-cid=\"15\" data-time=\"1454441327071\" data-userid=\"17\" data-username=\"Walker King\">so <\/delete>much closer to finishing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton edged Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont in a three-way race that lasted all evening. In a speech to her supporters, she commended him: \u201cI never thought that Bernie would be so <insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"24\" data-time=\"1454441372033\" data-userid=\"17\" data-username=\"Walker King\">lively<\/insert><delete class=\"del cts-1\" data-cid=\"18\" data-time=\"1454441370198\" data-userid=\"17\" data-username=\"Walker King\">virile<\/delete>, but that man\u2019s got spunk!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, Sanders spoke to his fervent followers at a precinct in Des Moines: \u201cThe people of Iowa know that it\u2019s not how long your resume is; it\u2019s how you use it! And, ladies and gentlemen, I use<insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"38\" data-time=\"1454441386428\" data-userid=\"17\" data-username=\"Walker King\"><delete class=\"del cts-2\" data-cid=\"3\" data-time=\"1454450809209\" data-userid=\"13\" data-username=\"Matthew Goldenberg\">d<\/delete><\/insert> it well!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Gov. Martin O\u2019Malley of Maryland, the third Democratic candidate, pulled out of the contest early on. I blew it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the tension built up towards Monday\u2019s climax, experts noted a surge in young and first-time caucus participants. Excited crowds spilled out into the streets as candidates made their final pushes to force Iowans to come and vote.<\/p>\n<p>Annabelle Jameson, a freshman at Drake University, said, \u201cThis is my first time getting involved with the caucus. I\u2019ve seen videos of it online before, but now I get to experience it for myself!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the caucus was wrapped up in one Dubuque precinct, local pastor John Hartman told reporters, \u201cThis caucus was by far the most exhilarating I\u2019ve ever seen. I never thought I\u2019d enjoy a caucus this much!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the caucus was particularly satisfying for Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania in 2012, it was out of his grasp this time.
