Carried out earlier this year, the study made waves as soon as it started. Given the typical nature of the Internet in general, the results took many by surprise<insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"11\" data-time=\"1462149203119\" data-userid=\"13\" data-username=\"Matthew Goldenberg\">\u2014<\/insert><delete class=\"del cts-1\" data-cid=\"9\" data-time=\"1462149200831\" data-userid=\"13\" data-username=\"Matthew Goldenberg\"> \u2013<\/delete> except Mahrez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne would expect red herrings, ad hominem attacks, and poorly channeled outrage to reduce both the quality of one\u2019s Internet experience and capacity for rational discussion,\u201d explained Mahrez. \u201cInstead, we found that these three worked in tandem as a \u2018mutually assured destruction\u2019 and actually convinced everyone to be nice to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"34\" data-time=\"1462149265454\" data-userid=\"13\" data-username=\"Matthew Goldenberg\">Undergraduate s<\/insert><delete class=\"del cts-1\" data-cid=\"48\" data-time=\"1462149269886\" data-userid=\"13\" data-username=\"Matthew Goldenberg\">S<\/delete>tudents <insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"51\" data-time=\"1462149273782\" data-userid=\"13\" data-username=\"Matthew Goldenberg\">at the University<\/insert>, many of whom are active on Overheard at UChicago, had a variety of reactions to the study, especially to the finding Mahrez outlined.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cI normally go on Overheard to see if there are any new Dean Boyer sightings or novel expressions of misery, but watching the arguments is really cool too!\u201d exclaimed second-year Jordan Spitzer. \u201cIt\u2019s a miracle how they remain objective and focused for at least 20 minutes or so \u2013 even Sosc discussion doesn\u2019t stay on topic for that long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, the administration seemed to be pleased with the results of the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study showcases the positive steps this administration has taken to protect a free exchange of ideas and intellectual discourse,\u201d <delete class=\"del cts-1\" data-cid=\"68\" data-time=\"1462149297268\" data-userid=\"13\" data-username=\"Matthew Goldenberg\">read<\/delete><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"69\" data-time=\"1462149297270\" data-userid=\"13\" data-username=\"Matthew Goldenberg\">said<\/insert> <delete class=\"del cts-1\" data-cid=\"73\" data-time=\"1462149310310\" data-userid=\"13\" data-username=\"Matthew Goldenberg\">a statement from<\/delete> Dean of the College John W.
