<\/insert>Since the dawn of man, there has been debate about the value of a liberal arts education,<\/insert> and,<\/delete> as a UChicago a<\/insert>A<\/delete>lumna<\/insert>us<\/delete>, I just want to say that the Core Curriculum has proved invaluable to me throughout life after graduation. Thanks to my H<\/insert>h<\/delete>umanities writing seminars, I am able to form a clear and concise argument featuring a clearly articulated thesis in order to defend my life choices to my parents. The Civ sequence gave me the experience of a lifetime: being able to feel my toes during the months of January-March. Also, because of C<\/insert>c<\/delete>ore B<\/insert>b<\/delete>iology and the P<\/insert>p<\/delete>hysical S<\/insert>s<\/delete>ciences sequences, I know that both evolution and climate change are real. <\/p>\n

But most importantly, thanks to my three wonderful quarters of S<\/insert>sosc<\/delete>SOSCS<\/delete><\/insert>Sosc<\/insert>, I have a great foundational knowledge of the classics of social and political thought. To demonstrate the Core\u2019s value, I thought that I would provide examples as to how this knowledge has served me in my postgraduate life. <\/p>\n

For instance, <\/insert>W<\/delete>w<\/insert>hen I submitted my nonfiction book on delta–<\/insert> <\/delete>epsilon proofs to a publishing group, they were extremely impressed by my allusions of Plato\u2019s allegory of the cave<\/insert>cave metaphor<\/delete> and offered me a book deal!<\/insert>.<\/delete> <\/p>\n

When a boy at my publishing group asked why I refuse to write fiction, I said that Socrates insists that gods and human beings hate the true lie and would not want to lie, either in speech, or deed by presenting an illusion.<\/p>\n

And <\/insert>W<\/delete>w<\/insert>hen I developed a crush on tha<\/insert>e <\/delete>t <\/insert>boy, I knew, thanks to Hobbes, that he must be good as the object of anyone\u2019s appetite or desire, that it<\/insert>s<\/delete> is<\/insert>t<\/delete> which they for their part calleth good ; <\/delete>and the object of their aversion, evil.<\/p>\n

When the boy I liked said that his parents only wanted<\/insert> him to date J<\/insert>j<\/delete>ewish women, I retorted that he should consider Marx\u2019s idea that religion is an illusion, the opiate of the masses, and a mere symptom of the slavery of mankind.<\/p>\n

Moreover, <\/insert>W<\/delete>w<\/insert>hen my mom asked why I haven\u2019t found a husband yet, I directed her to Marxism and answered that as a species-being I needed<\/insert> to focus on my contributions to society rather than my individualistic ego.<\/p>\n

When the doctor, to whom my mom made me see, asked “<\/insert>\u2018<\/delete>what hurts?\u201d I said \u201ceverything,\u201d because if one of T<\/insert>t<\/delete>he Republic\u2019s citizens suffers anything at all, either good or bad,<\/insert>.<\/delete> all will share in the joy or the pain in the community of pain and pleasure.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, <\/insert>w<\/insert>W<\/delete>hen my doctor asked if I lead an active lifestyle, I said “<\/insert>no,<\/insert>“<\/insert> since, according to Rousseau\u2019s natural history, women have become more sedentary and became<\/delete> accustomed to looking after the hut and the children.<\/p>\n

When he commented that I don\u2019t have any children, I replied that in the ideal Republic, all women and children are in common. Also,<\/insert> poetry is not allowed,<\/insert> and all men should participate in gymnastics. <\/p>\n

As seen through the above examples, UChicago\u2019s Core Curriculum has helped me navigate social situations, minimize awkward conversation, and keep my cultivated \u2018quirkiness\u2019 alive.
