Responding to a spate of home burglaries and street muggings, the University of Chicago Police Department announced,<\/delete> yesterday,<\/delete> a new plan to relocate Hyde Park<\/insert>the neighborhood<\/delete> 200ft<\/delete> feet<\/insert> directly above its current location. <\/insert><\/p>\n

The move was announced after a joint plan with the Chicago Police Department to <\/insert>significantly increased<\/delete> the local police presence, to<\/insert> the chagrin of many inebriated<\/insert>drunk<\/delete> students. CPD\u2019s presence increased<\/delete> Despite the subsequent upsurge in <\/insert>the number of police stops conducted, but<\/delete> local levels of crime and poverty remained unchanged. Uchicago\u2019s department of Safety and Security <\/delete><\/insert><\/p>\n

Citing the benefits of a secure perimeter, Associate Vice President for Safety and Security Eric M. Heath praised the plan\u2019s air <\/delete>tight approach: \u201cThis will bring our community the peace of mind we\u2019<\/delete> ha<\/insert>ve been after,\u201d Heath said. \u201cWe will not<\/insert>on\u2019t<\/delete> even need a police presence beyond 61st street or Cottage Grove anymore because the proposed elevator system will allow UCPD to profile and arrest individuals bringing crime into the area before they\u2019<\/delete> ha<\/insert>ve even set foot on our streets.“<\/insert><\/insert><\/p>\n

University administrators cheered on the move,<\/insert> which will open up a large swath of land below the old neighborhood.
