I\u2019d like to state for the record that I have never, not even once, been offered this chance while enrolled at the University of Chicago. This raises a few questions:<\/p>\n<p><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"2\" data-time=\"1479168692899\" data-userid=\"23\" data-username=\"Jacob Levin\"> <\/insert><\/p>\n<p><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"2\" data-time=\"1479168692899\" data-userid=\"23\" data-username=\"Jacob Levin\">1. It\u2019s not fair!!<\/insert><\/p>\n<p><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"2\" data-time=\"1479168692899\" data-userid=\"23\" data-username=\"Jacob Levin\">While technically not a question, this is my immediate gut reaction to hearing about other students\u2019 interactions with guts. STEM students get to wear goggles and hold knives in class? How come all I ever get are books? I just re-read every syllabus I\u2019ve ever received and I swear I\u2019ve never even held one knife in class. One time a teacher brought in cake to celebrate some famous writer\u2019s birthday<insert class=\"ins cts-3\" data-cid=\"10\" data-time=\"1479178357249\" data-userid=\"29\" data-username=\"Jack Toole\">,<\/insert> but even then I think we cut it with a fork.<\/insert><\/p>\n<p><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"2\" data-time=\"1479168692899\" data-userid=\"23\" data-username=\"Jacob Levin\"> <\/insert><\/p>\n<p><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"2\" data-time=\"1479168692899\" data-userid=\"23\" data-username=\"Jacob Levin\">2. Is Core Bio some sort of farce?<\/insert><\/p>\n<p><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"2\" data-time=\"1479168692899\" data-userid=\"23\" data-username=\"Jacob Levin\">When I took Core Biology my first year here, I thought it was the most advanced class this institution had to offer. Sometimes we got to wear lab coats and even touch microscopes. But now that I know we were denied basic scalpels and scissors and agai<delete class=\"del cts-2\" data-cid=\"3\" data-time=\"1479173922227\" data-userid=\"28\" data-username=\"Nik Varley\">n,<\/delete><\/insert><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"2\" data-time=\"1479168692899\" data-userid=\"23\" data-username=\"Jacob Levin\"><delete class=\"del cts-2\" data-cid=\"15\" data-time=\"1479245778632\" data-userid=\"28\" data-username=\"Nik Varley\"> <\/delete><insert class=\"ins cts-2\" data-cid=\"18\" data-time=\"1479245782600\" data-userid=\"28\" data-username=\"Nik Varley\">n, <\/insert>most importantly, <em>gloves,<\/em> I feel that important information, namely key details about what\u2019s hidden inside of animals, was <em>censored<\/em> from me. I heard all sorts of yammering about cells and DNA, but I wasn\u2019t permitted to look inside any animal at all. Did I even learn anything?<\/insert><\/p>\n<p><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"2\" data-time=\"1479168692899\" data-userid=\"23\" data-username=\"Jacob Levin\"> <\/insert><\/p>\n<p><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"2\" data-time=\"1479168692899\" data-userid=\"23\" data-username=\"Jacob Levin\">3. If we\u2019re expected to learn a language and a little bit about art to graduate, surely we should be expected to know how to take apart all the pieces of a cow\u2019s eye, right<delete class=\"del cts-2\" data-cid=\"7\" data-time=\"1479245752557\" data-userid=\"28\" data-username=\"Nik Varley\">?<\/delete>?<\/insert><\/p>\n<p><insert class=\"ins cts-1\" data-cid=\"2\" data-time=\"1479168692899\" data-userid=\"23\" data-username=\"Jacob Levin\">Everyone at this college won\u2019t shut up about the core<insert class=\"ins cts-2\" data-cid=\"8\" data-time=\"1479173959572\" data-userid=\"28\" data-username=\"Nik Varley\">,<\/insert> the core<insert class=\"ins cts-2\" data-cid=\"9\" data-time=\"1479173962380\" data-userid=\"28\" data-username=\"Nik Varley\">,<\/insert> the core. Let me tell you, I took the core, and I still don\u2019t know the first step of dissecting anything except a squid, and only because I did that four times between the ages of 9 and 15. All I know is that you need gloves. Now<insert class=\"ins cts-2\" data-cid=\"5\" data-time=\"1479245749875\" data-userid=\"28\" data-username=\"Nik Varley\">,<\/insert> I\u2019d gladly dissect a squid again (for the part where you get to write your name with its pen and its ink sac), but I don\u2019t know anything about eyes, brains, or any of the other \u201cfancier\u201d organs. If I want to fully understand <em>The Odyssey<\/em> the way biology majors understand <em>The Human Body<\/em>, I need access to knives and gloves and Homer\u2019s still-beating heart.
