A report titled \u201cFinal Overview: Mansueto Systems Anomalies\u201d details a long string of investigations and investments wherein<\/insert>that were<\/delete> the administration<\/insert> attempted<\/insert>ing<\/delete> to restore normal function to the robotic library system housed beneath Mansueto Library. The report estimates,<\/delete> that <\/insert>over the course of<\/insert> one year,<\/insert> this cost<\/delete> the u<\/insert>U<\/delete>niversity “spent <\/insert>upwards of four million dollars,<\/delete>\u201d to solve this issue,<\/insert> more than two thirds of which went towards building a \u201cCompanion Robot.”<\/insert>ot.\u201d<\/delete><\/p>\n

Beginning in February 2015, library technicians noted \u201cmomentary but insignificant decreases in productivity,\u201d including occasionally misplaced books and stoppages. The first technician to point out the anomaly <\/insert>ran the usual diagnostics and found zero hardware issues. Yet,<\/delete> by the following month, the problem had worsened as the robot frequently \u201cfailed to enter sleep mode\u201d and kept shelving and re-shelving books through the night without any apparent rhyme or reason<\/insert>. To make matters worse<\/insert>n turn<\/delete>, t<\/insert>T<\/delete>he lack of downtime seemed to be causing more malfunctions and outages as the days wore on,<\/insert> and <\/insert>and<\/delete> <\/delete> the <\/delete>documents<\/delete> report states that <\/delete>by May, <\/insert>\u201c<\/delete>efficiency was reportedly “<\/insert>down by more than 50%\u201d by May<\/delete>.“<\/insert><\/p>\n

June to September 2015 saw a considerable uptick in the robot\u2019s performance, as its services were not needed as frequently during the summer. The technicians assumed the problem had been solved. But by Thanksgiving, the system was as dysfunctional as it had been at the end of the previous spring quarter and the staff was out of ideas. On Black Friday, technician Christine Tau wandered into the library in the middle of the night while the system was active and blasting \u201cLast Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me\u201d by the Smiths. According to the repor<\/insert>I<\/delete>t, the robot<\/insert> \u201cmuted its speakers once it realized she was inside.\u201d <\/p>\n

After a few testy emails concerning \u201cresource allocation,”<\/insert>\u201d<\/delete> administrators agreed to send over a therapist<\/insert>someone<\/delete> from S<\/insert>s<\/delete>tudent C<\/insert>c<\/delete>ounseling to attempt <\/delete>to talk to the robot so as to understand the motives underlying its behavior.<\/insert>talk <\/delete>,<\/delete> Upo<\/insert>and a<\/delete>n being interviewed, an<\/insert> unidentified clinician reported the following: “<\/insert>\u201c\u2026<\/delete>The long hours pushing books,<\/delete> in near total darkness and isolation<\/insert>without much sunlight<\/delete>,<\/delete> and <\/delete>with <\/insert><\/delete>little to no outside interaction,<\/delete> has worn the system down, and i<\/insert> <\/delete>n my professional opinion, <\/insert>and <\/delete>I think it best for the patient<\/delete><\/insert> <\/delete> <\/delete>that a friend be manufactured for the bot<\/insert>, as all friends must be.\u201d<\/p>\n

By winter 2016, the system was operating at peak performance again and travelling the cavernous archives beneath the library with a state-of-the-art <\/insert>friend in its bin.
