According to our political correspondents in Washington,<\/insert> D.C., the ongoing federal Investigation into Russia\u2019s 2016 election interference<\/insert>influence<\/delete> made new headway earlier this week i<\/insert> <\/delete>i<\/delete>n the prosecution of Paul Manafort.<\/insert> earlier this week<\/delete>,<\/delete> The<\/insert>when the<\/delete> former Trump campaign manager was apparently <\/insert>detained by FBI agents after allegedly falling for the ol\u2019 \u201cDiplomatic Immunity Under a Box Propped Up by a Stick\u201d t<\/insert>T<\/delete>rick. <\/p>\n

Deploying a so-called \u201ch<\/insert>H<\/delete>oney–<\/delete>pot stratagem,\u201d former FBI Director and current investigation head Robert Mueller explained in a press release on Thursday that the Special Counsel\u2019s previous no-knock raid on Manafort\u2019s home last July had obtained sufficient evidence of potentially illegal activity to \u201cgo real old-school with this one.<\/insert>,<\/delete>\u201d S<\/insert>s<\/delete>ubsequently, the Special Counsel<\/insert> green-lighted<\/insert>ing<\/delete> a plan to detain Manafort by trapping him beneath a large overturned cardboard box perched over a manila envelope of legal documents strategically placed in Manafort\u2019s front yard. <\/p>\n

Mueller went on to reveal that, in exchange for a full testimony,<\/insert> the <\/insert>actual terms and conditions of immunity <\/delete>in exchange for a full<\/delete> testimony<\/delete>–<\/delete><\/insert> had been negotiated privately in a telephone conversation with Manafort\u2019s lawyers the week before the arrest. However, Mueller stated that<\/insert>, <\/delete>but that<\/delete> these were merely part of a federally-authorized ruse, and that the investigation had already decided to proceed with what Mue<\/insert>ller described as \u201cthe oldest trick in the book,\u201d despite the logistic and legal ramifications of doing so. \u201cThe amount of paperwork I had to fill out in order to obtain a Box Warrant of that caliber was obscene,\u201d Mueller explained, \u201cb<\/insert>B<\/delete>ut it was worth every pencil I burned through when I got to yank the rope and watch that fat cat take the bait hook, line, and<\/insert>&<\/delete> sinker.\u201d <\/p>\n

Manafort\u2019s defense attorneys, who were shocked to learn both that Manafort had been arrested and that the immunity terms were fabricated as bait, quickly began retaliatory efforts against the office of the investigation, filing multiple entrapment lawsuits and publicly criticizing the manner of arrest as both \u201cegregiously unlawful\u201d and \u201ccartoonishly absurd.\u201d Police reports following the arrest also revealed that the dossier used to lure Manafort into custody, placed visibly beneath the box and labelled \u201cG<\/insert>g<\/delete>et O<\/insert>U<\/delete><\/insert>o<\/delete>ut of J<\/insert>j<\/delete>ail F<\/insert>f<\/delete>ree\u201d in red crayon,<\/insert> had been opened to reveal only a printed copy of the U.S. Constitution, a Russian-to-English phrase booklet, and a large quantity of pencil shavings. <\/p>\n
