{"id":1478,"date":"2013-03-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-15T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/35.224.237.165\/index.php\/2019\/02\/25\/university-fails-mental-health-inspection\/"},"modified":"2019-05-16T07:15:49","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T00:15:49","slug":"university-fails-mental-health-inspection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chicagoshadydealer.com\/index.php\/2013\/03\/16\/university-fails-mental-health-inspection\/","title":{"rendered":"University Fails Mental Health Inspection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/shadybucket.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/763edacc72a6339882cb7ba7cd1747fd.width-1280.jpg\" alt=\" \" \/><\/p>\n<h6>By <a href=\"\/search?author=Breck Radulovic\">Breck Radulovic<\/a><\/h6>\n<h6>May 5, 2018<\/h6>\n<p>Bartlett Dining Commons<\/p>\n<p>The University of Chicago failed an April 16\u00a0mental health inspection\u00a0because of insufficient mental health resources, unsatisfactory support for those in need, and actively hostile policies toward students struggling with mental health, according to a report posted last Friday on EveryBlock Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>The University was found to be at \u201chigh risk\u201d by the City of Chicago\u2019s Department of Mental Health Protection Program after an\u00a0initial inspection found evidence of Title IX failures, poor mental health services across the campus, and a demanding work environment\u00a0that leaves many students physically and financially drained.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the inspector\u00a0observed over\u00a020 droppings in the University Student Counseling Services. \u201cThere were droppings everywhere,\u201d Inspector Martin Hall said. \u201cSCS dropping students who still needed their help, students being dropped off at Lake Shore Hospital, and the University forcing students to drop out after leaves of absence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inspector also noted that the SCS offices on Woodlawn were insufficient for the number of students who requested their services, and that certain individuals experienced negative outcomes as direct result of the University\u2019s negligence.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the report listed several cases&#8211;including both undergraduate and graduate students&#8211;where the University failed to provide the bare minimum of support for its community. Anxiety and depression were reportedly written off by the Administration as merely a part of the culture, and other mental illnesses were considered a direct liability to the University\u2019s reputation and profits.<\/p>\n<p>Though the University claims SCS is easily accessible, an inspector\u2019s comment stated that there are often long wait times to see a counselor and most students were referred off-campus for care.<\/p>\n<p>The University has also failed mental health inspections in the past.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012,\u00a0a failed mental health inspection\u00a0caused the University to insincerely promise to change its ways.
